Computerko Limited – Your IT Depot

IT downtime is expensive. Whether it is a server failure, a network outage, a laptop that will not start or a ransomware attack, every hour your team cannot work costs money. For small businesses in London and Essex where margins are often tight, significant downtime can be genuinely damaging.

The good news is that most IT downtime is preventable, or at least significantly reducible, through a relatively small number of consistent practices.

Keep Everything Updated

A large proportion of IT failures and security incidents exploit known vulnerabilities in software that has not been updated. Enabling automatic updates on all devices, operating systems and software is one of the single most effective things you can do to reduce both downtime and security risk.

This includes firmware updates on routers, switches and other network equipment, which are often overlooked. Outdated router firmware is a common attack vector and a source of stability issues.

Hardware Refresh Cycles

Ageing hardware fails more frequently. A laptop running for five or six years is statistically much more likely to suffer a hard drive failure or other hardware fault than one that is two years old. Maintaining a rolling hardware refresh programme keeps your fleet within reliable operating age and reduces failure rates.

Proper Backup and Recovery

When something does fail, the speed of recovery depends entirely on how well you have prepared. A robust backup system with tested recovery procedures means a hard drive failure or ransomware attack is an inconvenience rather than a disaster.

The key word there is tested. A backup you have never tried to restore from is not a backup you can rely on. Test your recovery procedure at least annually. Many businesses discover their backups were not working correctly only when they need them.

Business-Grade Equipment and Warranties

Consumer-grade IT equipment is not built for all-day business use. Business-grade laptops, desktops and network equipment are more reliable, have better warranty support, and are designed for the sustained workloads of a working day.

A next-business-day on-site warranty on your server means that if it fails, an engineer arrives the following morning. Without a proper warranty, you are waiting for diagnosis, parts ordering and repair scheduling, which can mean days of downtime.

Redundancy for Critical Systems

For systems where downtime is particularly costly, redundancy is worth considering. A second internet connection from a different provider means a broadband outage does not stop work. A NAS with RAID storage means a single drive failure does not cause data loss. A UPS means a power cut does not corrupt data or damage equipment.

IT Support Agreements

Having IT support in place before you need it matters. Whether that is an in-house IT person, a support contract with a local provider, or both, a clear escalation path for IT problems means issues get resolved faster. Waiting until a server fails to start researching IT support companies is not a position you want to be in.
